The sound she makes when they take her wings, the tears of an angel

late May 1983

It is like the devil’s claw in me

Struck-bug on a pin-board

Gaping in paralytic silence

The space between long moments

Life, tearing in half, tearing away

Blind, divine school boys

Plucking her wings away from-

Here the sky goes on for years

Agog and agape, tremors that

rock this wooly wooden frame

quickly wings beating

faster pleading please

‘do not do this thing to me’
